Four Things I Know To Be True

I don’t really know a lot. I’m still quite young and so far I haven’t really done anything. This means I’m always asking questions, always waiting on someone else to explain things to me. But here are four things I know for certain to be true, because I’ve been there:

  1. People Change

Whether it’s through the help of other people or they do it on their own, people change. And this can mean that friendships are lost, relationships end; things can just stop. It can be hard to deal with, especially if it feels like everyone around you is moving on, but it’s the most natural thing in the world. You can’t expect people to be the same person they’ve always been. You, like them, will grow and learn and become new with everything you experience and you just need to let go of the past and let it happen. Appreciate it, remember it but don’t let it hold you back.

  1. And Some People Don’t

Although I’ve just explained how change is the most natural thing in the world (I think that’s a direct quote actually), the truth is some people will always be the way they were in school. This is normally the case for those who peaked early; the popular kids. Generally they believe that because it all worked out for them then, they don’t need to change and grow. Which is sad because they really should. Although change, within yourself or those around you, can seem like a bad thing it’s really not. We all need to learn from our mistakes, that’s why we make them. If only everyone knew this the world would be nicer place!

  1. No One Knows What They’re Doing

I’m now nearly twenty years old and I still have no clue what I’m doing with my life or what I’m going to do and I’m finding that I’m not the only one. Everyone I talk to is in the same state of crisis. We’re all just winging it, floating through our daily lives pretending we know what’s happening. Sometimes our acts can be a little too convincing. We all know that one person who has everything sorted out and never fails to make us feel inadequate. But the thing is, they’re pretending too. Really, we’re all scared and nervous about what’s around the corner but we’re all hoping that it’s going to be exactly what we want. And if we all try, I know we’ll get there.

  1. It All Takes Time

To get the perfect job, a nice house, happiness even. Everything we want needs to be worked for and it’s so annoying. We’re all impatient and far too aware of how much time is passing that we often forget about what it is we’re working for. It seems like some people have it all, but what we don’t see is how they got there. The long hours at a crappy job; the many years in education or even just the constant practise at perfecting their talent. There’s going to be many days, weeks, even years that you spend working (in the literal sense like school or a job or otherwise) to finally reach that end goal but I’m sure it’ll all be worth it.   Sometimes there isn’t even an end goal; we’re just waiting for something.

Although it’s good to strive to achieve something, take time to appreciate where you are in the moment. Take in your surroundings, the people in your life and who you are right now because as I’ve said a few times now, it’ll all change one day. And what’s it’s gone you’ll realise how valuable it was.

Speak soon,

Rachael.
