I thought I knew what kind of music I liked. I was wrong. Here are three recent albums I’ve been obsessed with lately that are totally different from what I’d expect to like and I think you’ll love them too:
Beauty Behind the Madness: The Weeknd
“We’re meant for this, and if we’re not I hope you find somebody”
I am a white girl. Not only that but I am a British white girl. That means the contents of this album are incredibly awkward to me. The whole sex, drugs and R&B lifestyle just isn’t for me and not something I can relate to, if I’m honest. However I freaking love this album. I don’t know what it is but I can’t stop listening to it. Although overall it’s not something I can relate to, there are a few one-liners that just hit me. There’s also a lot of the N-word, which means listening to it on low-volume to prevent anyone on public transport getting a fright!
If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
“What a lovely way to burn”
My dad is a big fan of Elvis and that’s how I found this gem. Although I won’t call myself a fan of Elvis or anything remotely similar, I love this album because the songs are so familiar to me and remind me of home. But now they’ve got a modern, jazzy update and have become something fresh that I can actually listen to without horrific flashbacks to family karaoke parties. A particular favourite of mine is Fever, with a little cameo from Michael Buble. I guess Elvis is an icon for a reason, right?
25: Adele
“I wish I could live a little more, look up to the sky and not the floor”
I know; the world is Adele-mad. But I’m not and yet I find myself listening to this album on repeat. The hype made me do it and as much as it annoys me to say it, it was right. This album is so good. It’s totally typical Adele stuff but that’s what makes it work. It will leave you feeling blue, teary and alone in the world but who doesn’t love to feel like that every once in a while? As she always does, Adele manages to make anyone feel heartbroken and torn-up even if these are feelings you know or understand. I don’t know how she does it but it’s brilliant and I’ve now become one of those people. Sorry I’m not sorry.
I know these albums are popular right now, how else do you think I’d have found them? But I hope my little thoughts encourage you to have a listen (if you haven’t already!)
Speak soon,
Rachael.
