On Achieving Your Dreams & Fighting Your Brain

On Achieving Your Dreams & Fighting Your Brain
Daily writing prompt
Write about your dream home.

I already have my dream home. I know, what a brag but it’s true.

For a long period of time it felt like my current life was never going to happen – a partner, a home of our own, even our puppy. But things do work out.

Remembering this is the issue.

Wild Grey Oceans & Girlish Dreams

Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to live by the beach. Now, depending on where you’re from in the world, that may conjure up a different image to what I actually desired.

Brought up in the North East of England, beaches look a little different to the traditional holiday spots you may be picturing.

Our beaches are beautiful, but lower-contrast than the traditional image you may be holding in your mind right now. What we have are grey oceans, white sea foam, and beige sands – maybe not your idea of heaven, but it’s mine.

To further brag a little more, I achieved this girlhood dream by moving to a small seaside town. So not only do I have my dream home (which was any home I could afford to be honest with you), but I also have a dream location.

I can’t see the beach from my home, or hear the sea but it is within walking distance. Popping into town to run errands or driving through to the next village means the sea is right there.

Before moving here, I would frequently exclaim that if I lived close enough to the sea, I would be there every day, which people frequently disputed. “You don’t when you live here” and it’s true.

I rarely go to the beach these days, but, as my best friend reminded me, I can if I want.

Mind Tricks

To have achieved such a wonderful childhood dream feels amazing, but this is not always the mindset I approach my days from. In fact, I catch myself getting caught up with other things, far too often.

An issue with the house can send me spiralling (and as it’s an older house, there’s plenty of issues popping up) – yet I should be so grateful to have these problems in the first place.

A big lesson I’m learning as I grow up is getting what you want is just the first step.

It’s amazing to achieve something you desired and to look back on your past self and realise how proud they’d be. But these are fleeting moments – the trick is to live in this mentality.

I waste so much of my time worrying about the next thing or if I’m doing things right when I could just be here. I should be taking in the changes my life has seen so far and appreciate where I am now because it can all change in a moment.

From Me To You

As someone living their dream life, let me tell you – you need to get your mind right.

You can achieve your dream home or anything else you desire without realising it, because you’re so caught up in there.

It is so easy to get caught up in the same old stories, no matter how much our physical world has changed. Whether you allow yourself to fall victim to this, or decide that enough is enough is up to you. But I know what I need to do, and I’ll be doing it from my dream house by the sea.

Speak soon,

Rachael.
